Walk Safely to School

Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event where students at UMG are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, and the environment.

This years event will be held on Friday 18th May 2018To support this event we are organising a walking school bus.

What is a walking school bus? A walking school bus is a school bus powered not by an engine but by legs. Children don’t sit inside this ‘bus’ – they walk in a group to school, with a teacher ‘driver’ in the front and a teacher ‘conductor’ at the rear. The walkers are the bus. This is how the bus works:

  • The bus travels along a set route to school, picking up children along the way at designated ‘bus stops’.

  • All children are welcome to join the bus, with or without parents. However parents are more than welcome to join the bus and walk to school with their child or children.

  • Safety on the bus is of high importance. The route therefore is thoroughly checked for traffic hazards, and children are informed of what behaviour is expected whilst on board the Walking Bus.

We have designed two routes (PDF 240KB) for Friday’s walking bus:

Parents - You are responsible for:

  1. supervision of your child between home and actual pick-up by the walking school bus
  2. your child being on time at the designated pick-up point
  3. impressing on your child that they comply with the directions given by the walking bus staff

Students - You are responsible for:

  1. walking between the bus driver and conductor
  2. following all directions, instructions and behaving sensibly while walking with the bus.
  3. sharing the footpath with others
  4. not damaging property as we pass

All students need to do is decided at which bus stop they wish to catch the bus at and be there before the departure time.

Remember the bus will not wait if you are late!

All bus stops will be signposted and the walking bus will not leave until the nominated time.
