UMG School Council Members

 

Chairman Upper Mount Gravatt School Council : Mr Bruce McDonald

Bruce trained as a Primary teacher in the 1970s and taught for 4 years before resigning to pursue other career options.
 
In the 20 years he was out of the teaching profession, Bruce worked as a Licensed Club Manager, Marketing Manager for the QTCU, Marketing and Communications Manager for the CSIRO Division of Food; and then Managing Director of his own marketing and publishing company.  Bruce wrote and published a number of books before re-joining the teaching profession as a supply teacher in 1998 and then as a full time permanent employee in 2004.
 
In the course of his career, Bruce has served in many honorary roles including:
  • Chairman of the QLD Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia
  • Trustee for the QTCU Superannuation Fund
  • Board member of the QLD Chapter of the Australian Direct Marketing Association
  • President of the QTCU Staff Association (internal independent union)
  • Secretary / Manager Northern Suburbs Hockey Club
  • Secretary of the Brisbane Hockey Association
  • Board member Redlands Hockey Association
  • Justice of the Peace (QLD)
Bruce believes that, as teachers, it is not our job to lead horses to water and make them drink; it is our job to make them (the children) thirsty - then they will find their own way to the water and drink! Education - lap it up!
 

 Official Member : Mr Derek Brady (School Principal)

Derek Brady has been an educator for the past 29 years. Previous to his roles as a teacher, Deputy Principal and Principal, he worked as a Warranty Clerk and Service Advisor for Ford Motor Company. 
 

Derek has also worked as an Auxiliary Fireman and Bar Attendant at his local RSL Club.

Derek has been Principal at Upper Mount Gravatt State School for the past 10 years. He spent 19 years working in schools in Far North and North West Queensland.
 

Derek was awarded the Pride of Australia Medal for Education in 2009 and the Professor Ian Frazer Humanitarian Award for his voluntary work with Lion's medical research in 2013.

Derek believes that emotional intelligence is the cornerstone to a successful education.
 

Official Member : Mrs Tania Harman (P & C President)

In Tania’s current position as Upper Mount Gravatt State School P&C President, she also holds an Executive Member of the Upper Mount Gravatt School Council.
 
Tania has two children currently attending UMG and she has been part of the school community for the past 7 years. Tania has been sitting on the P&C Executive for the last 2 years, with a community driven focus.
 
Tania has a strong interest in Technology and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and has brought this focus to the current Executive Board of the P&C, contributing P&C funds to the School’s ICT infrastructure critical upgrade to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged and can be best prepared and educated for the jobs of the future.
 
Tania has a Bachelor of Business degree (with Distinction) (majors in Computing and Accounting) and is a CA (Member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand).
 
Tania’s professional career spans over 20 years working in “Big 4” accounting firm, working with small businesses to large public companies, covering industries including mining, manufacturing, infrastructure, agriculture, IT and energy.
 
Tania enjoys tennis, cooking and spending as much time as possible with her family. 
 

Staff Member : Ms Erica McCaskie

Erica McCaskie has been an educator as an Education Assistant for the past 30 years. Previous to Education she was a personal assistant to a Bank Manager. 
 

Her sons Joel and Andrew who are past students of UMG are both successful in their careers and life.

She volunteers with Pineland Lions and was awarded the Professor Ian Frazer Humanitarian Award for services to medical research foundation. 
 

Erica enjoys travelling overseas, music, tennis and spending lots of time with family.

Parent Member : Mrs Victoria Leadbetter

Victoria is a Secondary School Special Education Teacher working for Education Queensland.

Prior to commencing her career as a teacher in 2010, she worked for 10 years as a Speech Pathologist in government and non-government sectors.

Victoria has two children enrolled at Upper Mt Gravatt State School and has previously held the position of Vice President of the Parents and Citizens Association at UMG.

Victoria and her family live in the local area and she is a passionate about encouraging families to live local and engage with their community. She enjoys running, mountain biking and adventure racing.
