School Chaplain

Our School Chaplain 2017
 Robyn Weare

What does a School Chaplain do?

A School Chaplain is a safe person for young people to connect with at school and provides a listening ear, caring presence, and a message of hope.  Chaplains run positive, fun activities for students and assist in fostering supportive, caring school communities.

Working with other members of the school’s support team, the Chaplain cares for students struggling with issues such as difficult relationships with other children or family members, poor self-esteem, family breakdown, and depression.

The partnership between the school and the Chaplaincy Service, supported by local churches, businesses and community organisations, provides a network of local support and assistance.  These positive relationships help young people to face difficult issues, and provide hope, connection, meaning, and purpose.

The Chaplaincy Service is available to everyone in the school community regardless of their religious beliefs.

Who is the Upper Mt Gravatt State School Chaplain?

My name is Robyn Weare or Miss Robyn as the children call me. I have been a mum at the school for 8 years and now have the wonderful opportunity to be a Chaplain since 2014. I have had a lot of experience with children in terms of their growth and development. It has taken me a long time (15 years) but have completed a Degree in Human Services and a Masters in Public Health. My passion is to see children grow, develop and feel confident about themselves and the world around them. I love chatting to people so parents, caregivers and staff always know I’m up for a coffee any time of the day!

What will Chaplaincy look like at Upper Mt Gravatt State School in 2017?

During 2017, I will assist with sporting and cultural programs, attend school camps, assist in classrooms, run programs that help students develop social and life skills.  During Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays lunchtimes, we enjoy craft and a variety of games which assist to improve our friendship and social skills also.  If parents/caregivers wish their child to see me on an individual basis for support and encouragement, this can be arranged through contact with myself direct or the class teacher.

Will my child be involved?

Involvement with the Chaplain is entirely voluntary and students choose whether or not they want to be a part of the activities that are offered.  Parents will be consulted if their child wishes to be involved in ongoing one-to-one meetings with the Chaplain or in any program or group involving spiritual or ethical content.  Parents have the right to refuse permission for their child to be involved in any Chaplaincy activity or event.

How can I contact the Chaplain?

My work days are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8.15am – 3.00pm. I can be contacted by telephone on: 3421 3105 or email: robynw@chappy.org.au. My shared room is located on the first floor, 3 doors down from the school office. If I am not in the room, I leave a message as to my location within the school and the office will be happy to contact me on your behalf. I look forward to meeting with you and continue to build our school community together.
